01 / THE TRADITION

LORD VISHNU · भगवान विष्णु

The one who sustains.

Lord Vishnu is revered in Hindu traditions as the preserving presence who restores balance when dharma is threatened.

His familiar four arms carry the shankha (conch), chakra (discus), gada (mace) and padma (lotus). These are not simply ornaments: devotees and commentators read them as reminders of sacred sound, protection, strength and purity.

Vaishnava traditions describe him with Lakshmi, on Garuda or resting upon Ananta Shesha. The stories of Rama and Krishna, understood in many traditions as avatars of Lord Vishnu, bring these vast ideas into human lives and choices.

02 / AVATARS

DASHAVATARA · दशावतार

The ten forms,
many tellings.

In the Dashavatara, Lord Vishnu enters the world in different forms to restore dharma. Lists differ across regions and Vaishnava traditions, especially at the ninth place.

Read the Narasimha story ↗

The ninth entry is shown as Buddha / Balarama because both occur in established traditions. A single universal list would hide that difference.
